  • MySQL Database Administrator (DBA) – AWS RDS
  • Full time
  • Any
  • Bangalore

About the Role

We are looking for an experienced MySQL Database Administrator (DBA) with strong hands-on experience in AWS RDS for MySQL to manage, optimize, secure, and maintain production database environments.

The ideal candidate should have practical experience managing high-availability MySQL databases, troubleshooting performance issues, optimizing complex queries, implementing backup and disaster recovery strategies, and administering databases hosted on AWS.

You will work closely with application developers, DevOps engineers, and infrastructure teams to ensure our databases remain secure, highly available, scalable, and performant.

Key Responsibilities

  • Manage and administer MySQL databases across development, staging, and production environments.
  • Manage AWS RDS for MySQL instances, configurations, parameter groups, storage, backups, snapshots, and maintenance.
  • Monitor database health, availability, CPU, memory, storage, connections, IOPS, and query performance.
  • Perform SQL query optimization and performance tuning.
  • Identify and troubleshoot slow queries using:
  • Slow Query Log
  • EXPLAIN / EXPLAIN ANALYZE
  • Performance Schema
  • AWS Performance Insights / Database Insights
  • CloudWatch metrics and logs
  • Optimize indexes, database schemas, queries, and table structures.
  • Configure and manage RDS Multi-AZ deployments for high availability.
  • Manage Read Replicas and replication-related issues.
  • Plan and execute database scaling, including instance upgrades and storage optimization.
  • Implement and maintain automated backups, manual snapshots, point-in-time recovery, and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Perform database restoration and periodically test backup recovery procedures.
  • Handle MySQL version upgrades and AWS RDS maintenance activities.
  • Manage database users, roles, privileges, and access controls.
  • Implement database security best practices, including encryption, SSL/TLS, IAM integration where applicable, and least-privilege access.
  • Work with AWS VPC, Security Groups, IAM, KMS, CloudWatch, Secrets Manager, and other services related to RDS security and monitoring.
  • Troubleshoot database connectivity, locking, deadlocks, connection exhaustion, replication lag, and application performance issues.
  • Monitor and optimize database storage and infrastructure costs.
  • Support database migration from on-premise/VM MySQL to AWS RDS and between RDS environments.
  • Assist developers with database design, indexing strategies, stored procedures, queries, and performance improvements.
  • Establish database monitoring, alerting, maintenance, and capacity-planning processes.
  • Maintain database documentation, SOPs, backup policies, and disaster recovery procedures.
  • Participate in production incident troubleshooting and root-cause analysis.

Required Skills

  • Strong hands-on experience with MySQL Database Administration.
  • Strong experience managing AWS RDS for MySQL in production environments.

Excellent knowledge of:

  • MySQL architecture
  • InnoDB
  • Indexing
  • Query optimization
  • Transactions
  • Locking and deadlocks
  • Performance tuning
  • Backup and recovery
  • Replication
  • Experience troubleshooting high CPU, memory, connection, IOPS, storage, and slow-query issues.
  • Strong SQL skills and ability to analyze and optimize complex queries.
  • Experience with AWS CloudWatch and database performance monitoring.
  • Understanding of AWS networking concepts such as VPC, subnets, security groups, and private database connectivity.
  • Experience with database security, user permissions, encryption, and auditing.
  • Experience handling production database incidents and performance bottlenecks.
  • Good understanding of High Availability and Disaster Recovery (HA/DR) concepts.
  • Ability to work with developers and DevOps teams to troubleshoot application/database performance issues.

Good to Have

  • Experience with Amazon Aurora MySQL.
  • Experience with AWS Database Migration Service (DMS).
  • Experience migrating large MySQL databases to AWS.
  • Knowledge of PostgreSQL or Microsoft SQL Server.
  • Experience with Terraform, CloudFormation, or other Infrastructure-as-Code tools.
  • Knowledge of Linux administration and shell scripting.
  • Experience with database monitoring tools such as Grafana, Prometheus, Datadog, or similar.
  • Experience supporting databases for high-traffic web applications, SaaS platforms, ERP/CRM systems, or enterprise applications.
  • AWS certification or relevant database certification is an advantage.

Experience

2–6 years of relevant experience in MySQL Database Administration, with hands-on experience managing AWS RDS MySQL production environments.

What We Are Looking For

We are specifically looking for a hands-on DBA, not someone with only theoretical or basic SQL knowledge.

The candidate should be comfortable independently investigating issues such as:

  • Why a MySQL RDS instance suddenly reaches 90–100% CPU
  • Why an application query that previously took 200 ms now takes several seconds
  • How to identify missing or inefficient indexes
  • How to troubleshoot deadlocks and locking issues
  • How to handle too many database connections
  • How to safely restore a production database
  • How to minimize downtime during database migration or upgrades
  • How to design backup and disaster recovery strategies
  • How and when to use Multi-AZ and Read Replicas
  • How to improve RDS performance without unnecessarily increasing AWS infrastructure costs

Job Type: Full-Time

Department: Cloud Infrastructure / Database Administration / DevOps
