The Calculation
Google calculates your business rating using a weighted average of all your reviews. The formula is simple:
Rating = (5★ × count + 4★ × count + 3★ × count + 2★ × count + 1★ × count) ÷ Total Reviews
For example, if you have 10 five-star reviews, 5 four-star reviews, and 5 one-star reviews, your rating would be:
(10 × 5 + 5 × 4 + 0 × 3 + 0 × 2 + 5 × 1) ÷ 20 = (50 + 20 + 0 + 0 + 5) ÷ 20 = 75 ÷ 20 = 3.75
Review Weighting
While the basic calculation is straightforward, Google may apply additional factors to determine which reviews have more influence:
- Recency: Newer reviews may carry more weight than older ones
- Review Quality: Detailed reviews with text may have more impact than star-only reviews
- Reviewer Authority: Reviews from established Google reviewers (Local Guides) might have more influence
- Review Velocity: Sudden spikes in reviews (positive or negative) might be scrutinized more closely
